2018 – Year in Review

Written by 479

As the year comes to a close it has become a custom to write a yearly review. This year I have once again been fortunate enough to be able to dedicate a handful weekends on track and also spend a memorable weekend exploring the Pikes Peak area of Colorado.

Work has kept me extremely busy this year, with almost monthly trips to the USA, which has limited the amount of track days compared to last year, although the professional rewards have been worth it.

After starting on motorcycles in 2017 I didn’t think I could make as much progress this year as I did last year, but the improvements have surprised me. A few minor upgrades and changes in attitude have allowed me to make huge gains in pace and consistency. Despite the bike being almost the same on a component level to last year my pace has been approximately 2-3 seconds faster at each track.

One of the most influential upgrades was the new tailored suit, which has given me a lot more freedom and confidence on the bike, which has translated into a noticeable improvement.

Here’s a quick summary of the year:
– 3 days at Franciacorta
– 2 days at Magny-Cours
– 2 days at Anneau Du Rhin
– 2 days off-road around Pikes Peak & Colorado Springs

The year started out with me preparing the motorcycle to be more tailored towards endurance racing. All fluid orifices were secured and lock wired and a new front sub-frame was designed to support the new forward lighting for night racing.
New rear bodywork was mounted, finally eliminating all the stock body panels for stronger glass fiber versions.

2018 Spec:

16 April – Franciacorta

First track day of the year to dust off the bikes and ourselves. Was able to match my fastest pace from the end of last year right from the beginning.

Yamaha R1 ’17

Easily one of the best decisions one can make: buy a new R1.

July – Pikes Peak & Colorado Springs

An incredible weekend exploring the off-road trails around Colorado Springs and ascending Pikes Peak. I need to repeat this next year!

27-28-29 July – Magny-Cours

Back at Magny-Cours during the 500 mile endurance race weekend. Hopefully next year we may be able to take part.

26-27 August – Anneau Du Rhin

A great solo weekend on this gem of a track not too far from Switzerland.

13-14 October – Franciacorta & Time Attack Championship

Final round of the time attack championship for a perfect way to end the season.

As usual I’ve had the best company throughout the year and it’s been a pleasure racing together. Looking forward to repeat again next year!
